Civilizations Project

The BGHS Social Studies department has decided that we are generally covering world history from about 1500 C.E. to the present. Of course, it is my opinion that students need a refresher in the history that came before 1500 C.E. so as to better understand how the world came to be. In this vein, we’ve spent some time working on World History Timelines, which provided a wide and shallow look various historical time periods and events. Our next learning segment will dive deeper into 5 of the worlds great Civilizations and Empires.

Students will be working with a group to analyze a civilization (using “G.R.A.P.E.S.”) to identify key characteristics, determine the causes for the rise and fall of the civilization and identify lasting impacts of the civilization.

Today in class, I presented this PowerPoint Presentation on Civilizations and “G.R.A.P.E.S.” to the students.  G.R.A.P.E.S. is an acronym representing Geography, Religions, Achievements, Political Systems, Economics and Social Structure.  These factors are important in identifying how and why a civilization was successful.  Towards the end of the presentation, students learned about the requirements for their next project including the use of G.R.A.P.E.S in their presentations.

Additionally, students were provided with a Guided Notes sheet focusing on G.R.A.P.E.S. to help them structure the information they find as they search for relevant details.

The assignment sheet and rubric for the Civilization presentations lays out the important details that need to be included in the presentation.  Students will work on finding the information they need in class on Friday, September 18th and then begin building their presentations in Google Slides on Monday, the 21st.  Students should be practicing their presentation and making final adjustments on Tuesday the 22nd and all presentations will be given on Wednesday the 23rd.

I’m looking forward to the great work!
